What is the Verbal Fluency?
Verbal Fluency tests ask people to produce as many words as they can that fit a rule, usually within a time limit. Classic versions include letter fluency, where you name words beginning with a given letter, and category fluency, where you name examples of a category such as animals. They are among the most widely used measures in neuropsychology.
Researchers use verbal fluency tasks to study lexical retrieval, the ability to search memory for words, and executive function, the control processes that keep a search organised and avoid repeats. The Neuroptimize Verbal Fluency game uses a letter-based rule instead: you get a fixed set of letter tiles and 75 seconds to build as many valid words from them as you can.
How to play the Verbal Fluency
- Six to eight letter tiles appear, along with a note telling you the minimum word length, such as "Make words of 3+ letters".
- Tap tiles to build a word, then press Enter to submit it. On a keyboard you can type letters, press Enter to submit, Backspace to delete, Escape to clear and Space to shuffle.
- Each tile can be used once per word. Valid words are added to your found list, longer words score much more, and a word that uses every tile earns a large bonus.
- A word that is too short, already found or not in the word list counts as a miss and breaks your combo.
- A counter shows how many of the possible words you have found. Find them all and a fresh set of letters appears.
- Each session lasts 75 seconds. As your level rises you get more tiles (7 from level 9, 8 from level 18), and the minimum length grows to 4 letters from level 11 and 5 letters from level 22.
Strategies and tips
Find the full word early
The tiles always come from a real word that uses every letter, and finding it earns a big bonus. Spend a few seconds looking for it at the start, since it often contains many shorter words too.
Add endings to what you find
Once you have a word, try extending it with an s, ed, er or ing if the tiles allow. "Lane" can become "lanes" or "planes", and each is a separate word.
Swap one letter at a time
From a word like "pan", change a single letter to find "pen", "pin" or "tan" if those letters are available. Working through small changes is a steady way to keep finding new words.
Aim for longer words
Points grow quickly with length, so one 6 letter word is worth far more than several 3 letter ones. On higher levels, where short words are not accepted, this matters even more.
Shuffle when you run dry
Shuffle rearranges the tiles without affecting your current word. A new layout often puts letters side by side in a way that suggests words you had missed.
The science behind the Verbal Fluency
Verbal fluency tests ask people to produce as many words as possible that meet a constraint within a time limit. They are standard neuropsychological measures of lexical retrieval and executive function. This game uses a letter-based constraint, forming words from a fixed set of letters.
Frequently asked questions
What is a verbal fluency test?
A verbal fluency test asks you to say or write as many words as you can that follow a rule, usually within a minute or so. Common rules are words starting with a particular letter or words from a category, such as animals.
Why was my word not accepted?
Words must meet the minimum length shown on screen, must not have been found already, and must be in the game's word list. The list does not contain every word in the language, so a real but uncommon word may occasionally be rejected.
How are words scored?
Longer words are worth much more than short ones, and using every tile in a single word earns an extra bonus. Your results show how many words you found and your longest word.
